Knee Arthroscopy (ACL) Q & A

What is knee arthroscopy?

Knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive form of orthopedic surgery that is used to diagnose and treat a wide variety of conditions and injuries. During knee arthroscopy, Dr. Coleman makes small incisions around the knee and uses specially designed instruments including an arthroscope, which is a small camera mounted on the end of a thin and flexible tube. The arthroscope sends live video feed to a monitor in the operating room where Dr. Coleman can closely examine the joint without having to make large incisions to open up the skin and tissue. If a procedure is needed to repair the knee, Dr. Coleman uses special surgical instruments inserted through the small incisions to complete the surgery.

What conditions are treated with knee arthroscopy?

In cases where more conservative treatment options are not effective, Dr. Coleman may suggest knee arthroscopy to address conditions such as:

  • Torn meniscus
  • Torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)
  • Inflamed synovial tissue
  • Damaged articular cartilage
  • Patella problems
  • Sepsis
  • Loose fragments of bone or cartilage

How do I know if I need knee arthroscopy?

When a patient doesn’t respond to conservative treatments including physical therapy, rest, medication, and corticosteroid injections, Dr. Coleman conducts a thorough diagnostic exam to ensure a patient is healthy enough for surgery. He needs to know what medications the patient takes, including vitamins and supplements. He may advise avoiding certain medications during the days before surgery. Dr. Coleman is a gifted orthopedic surgeon, but only advises surgery when it is the best possible treatment option for a patient.

What are the benefits of knee arthroscopy?

There are a number of benefits to having knee arthroscopy in comparison to traditional open surgery. Minimally invasive surgery is just as effective as open surgeries but often takes significantly less time to complete, often within 30-60 minutes. Knee arthroscopy also typically requires less time for recovery and results in less scarring. Patients are usually able to return home to rest about 2 hours after surgery is completed. Minimally invasive procedures such as arthroscopy also reduce the risk of infection and result in better overall patient outcomes.
